Travel day! Most of the scientific crew was in transit via Schiphol, Amsterdam. After a two hour delay (thanks to Javier for that one!) the plane left for Cesaria Evora airport, Sao Vicente, Cape Verde.
Two hours before arriving on Cape Verde the summit of one of the Canary Island volcanoes emerged through the clouds. When we were about to land the plane had to fly in between two sharp cliffs, on an airstrip close to the sea.
After an intense interrogation by the foreign police at the airport, we almost lost two crew members and three sets of luggage. Luckily, the Norwegian guy romantically and heroically saved the Greek woman from the police by taking care of her visa. The crew then went by bus to three separate hotels in Mindelo city.
The crew spent the day exploring the city. We visited a marketplace that sold chairs made recycled car tyres, went to a local café, and there was even time for styling. An unnamed Norwegian crew member in desperate need of a haircut went to the hairdresser, where he barely escaped kidnapping by six local female rugby players (thanks for the heads up, alpha-Chris).
The same night everybody met for dinner at a local restaurant. The food was good, but slow, and until this day no one knows if Bobbie John ever got served. The rest of the night went on through a fog caipirinhas and local Grogue.
