Today the ship left the port around 09:00. We were hoping for a storm, but unfortunately the weather was perfect when we left, so the seasick sailor pictures will have to wait. Accompanying us were blue skies, schools of flying fish and two dolphins.
On the way out we had an impressive view of the geology of Sao Vicente and its neighbouring island Santo Antao. The mountain cliffs were rugged and displayed beautiful outcrops of inclined brown pyroclastic deposits, with impressive ridges and incisions in the landscape, all covered by contrasting green vegetation.
In the morning we had a safety briefing in the conference room, followed by a safety drill at 16:00 at the muster stations. Everyone had to try on the survival suit, which got sweatier and sweatier with each new person putting it on.
Otherwise, people have been unpacking their gear, setting up their labs and most importantly: figuring out how to access the internet.
Tomorrow we look forward to the response of the newbies to the constant rolling of the ship during the first night onboard. At 09:00 we have our first science meeting. To be continued.
